Hans and I were married on the 16th of July, 2009. Both of us being passionate about the Outdoors, we spent our honeymoon visiting some of the most beautiful spots in KZN. We travelled as far as Port Edward along the South Coast and slowly made our way back to Gauteng via Oribi Gorge, Retief’s Rock and the glorious Golden Gate Park. Perhaps it was the golden glow of marital happiness affecting us, but we fell in love all over again with our exceptionally beautiful coastline and mountains.
At Retief’s Rock we stayed in an enchanting chalet overlooking the Drakensberg Mountains at a place called Dumbe. Despite the bitter cold, we were snugly ensconced in our secluded hideaway with a cosy fire crackling day and night. The starry night sky viewed from inside a frothy bubble bath was unforgettable!
The grandeur of the Golden Gate Park was breathtaking. The glow of the early morning sun on the majestic cliffs is a sight one never tires of. Here we hiked up a hill to see the Vultures Restaurant. We did not see a single vulture, but had a special encounter with a little black-backed jackal. Despite being an avid camper, I am never comfortable answering a call of nature in the Veld. (Too many spiders and gogga’s that can scare a girl!) Hans created a masterpiece of an outdoor rock-potty for me with an amazing view. I just loved my Sweetheart for this! While I was sitting on my “throne”, we saw the black-backed jackal trotting along the road towards our car parked at the foot of the hill. He looked up in our direction and made his mark on the front tyre as if to say, “If you can leave your mark on my territory, I’ll do the same!” We hiked down the hill and followed the jackal for almost 30 minutes while it was hunting.
Honeymoons are usually very special occasions. But what made ours so wonderful was that our hearts felt completely at peace while we feasted our eyes on the miracle of Nature day after day. Since then we have had wonderful times camping under a roof of beautiful blue sky. Honeymoons are not only for newly-weds, after all.
